Following the Grain

Every Kaufeldt pipe is designed, carved and finished by Fredrik in a small workshop on Sweden's west coast.

Each pipe begins with a single block of briar. Before the first cut is made, the grain, structure and balance of the wood are carefully studied.

There is no fixed design. The material suggests the direction, and the role of the maker is to discover the shape already waiting inside it.

Sometimes hidden flaws appear as the work progresses. Not every block becomes a pipe.

The Briar

Briar comes from the root burl of the Mediterranean heath tree (Erica arborea). Its heat resistance, density and stability have made it the preferred material for tobacco pipes for generations.

After harvesting, the burl is boiled and air-dried over many years before it is ready to be worked. Even then, no two blocks are alike.

The Shape

Once the block has been cut to its rough outline, most of the shaping is done by knife rather than machine. This slower process allows the form to emerge gradually, following the grain and character of the briar.

The Finish

The final stages take time. Each pipe is sanded by hand through successive grades until the surface feels right.

For more rustic finishes, Fredrik uses workshop-made tools that bring out the natural character of the briar.

The pipe is then polished and finished with wax, revealing the depth and warmth of the wood.
